Tips for Visiting 2010 Expo Shanghai
Shanghai finally welcomes the opening of Expo 2010 after eight years of preparation. As the biggest Expo site ever in the event's history, it is not easy to cover everything in one day. However, you can do it in an efficient way to avoid crowds and maximize your visit. Here are some tips for visitors to Shanghai and Expo 2010 for a great experience.
There are 8 direct entrances at the Expo site, another 4 ferry entry locations, and 1 metro line entrance. It is recommended to avoid entrances in the Pudong side. Most country/city pavilions are in Pudong area, as well as the Expo Axis (main entrance), more visitors tend to enter there. It takes longer to pass the security check entering the actual site. Moreover, the machines to reserve popular pavilions e.g. China pavilion will be running short. Entering from Puxi entrances (Gate 1, 2, 3) can be a better choice to avoid crowds and start the Expo visit in a fresh way.
Besides public transportation like metro, Expo bus, ferry, the Expo taxis in light yellow-green colour are easy to identify. They are much newer and also bigger in space. Note that common taxis can't access to the Expo area.
The Expo site is opening till 24:00 every day, so a late start may help to avoid crowds. If you enter around 11 – 12 am, there will still be 10+ hours to visit various pavilions. Moreover, you can enjoy the night view of various pavilions and the stunning one-arch Lupu Bridge.
After you arrived at the Expo site, there will be the security check. Have a read of what can bring and what are forbidden, and you can get through the security check quicker. E.g. water is not allowed to bring into the Expo site.
Once you entered the Expo site, it is recommended to get an Expo site map first. You can get a better idea of the layout and plan your itinerary of the day. Where to get the map? In the information centre near entrances. Make a reservation of the pavilions if required. Many popular pavilions require reservation, e.g. the China Pavilion, the Theme Pavilions… Appointments can be made with the booking machines near entrances. This is to better control the visitor flow in the site and avoid extreme long queuing.
Last but not least, check out performances of your visiting day. There are in average a hundred performances every day. You can enjoy various entertainments presented by different countries and regions. It can be good stops between pavilion visits.
Done with the Expo visit? There is yet another bigger stage - the city Shanghai! You can extend your exciting Expo travel with city visit and sightseeing tours customized by your local Shanghai tour guides

Top Five Sightseeing Spot in Shanghai
Shanghai, the largest and richest city in China is an amazing mix of traditional China and western civilization.Symbols of Shanghai's multi-cultural features scatter around every corner of the city particularly along the Huangpujiang River, which houses the largest array of Art Deco architecture in the world. Here are some top attractions in Shanghai:
#One: Yuyuan Garden
Yuyuan Garden is believed to have been built in the Ming Dynasty, more than 400 years ago. The exquisite layout, beautiful scenery and the artistic style of the garden architecture have made the garden one of the highlights of Shanghai.
Yuyuan literally translated means Happy Garden. It is located in the center of Shanghai's Old City, a few blocks south of the Bund. It has a total area of about two hectares (five acres) and more than 40 attractions The inner and outer gardens were both built in the Ming Dynasty classical style, with numerous rock and tree garden areas, ponds, dragon-lined walls and numerous doorways and zigzagging bridges separating the various garden areas and pavilions.
#Two: Jade Buddha Temple
Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai is an active temple, with 70 resident monks at the last count. The 70 monks who live and work there can sometimes be seen worshiping.
The temple was built between 1911 and 1918 in the style of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), with symmetrical halls and courtyards, upturned eaves, and bright yellow walls. The exterior is readily identifiable by the bright saffron walls.
#Three: The Bund
The Bund is one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of Shanghai. The word ‘bund' derives from an Anglo-Indian word for an embankment along a muddy waterfront and that is what it was in the beginning, when the first British company opened an office there in 1846. It became the epitome of elegance during Shanghai's history as a city of trade. Now many attractive new constructions have been erected in addition to the historical buildings. A 771-metre long retaining wall for flood control was built. Atop the wall is a spacious walkway for sightseeing. Paved with colorful tiles and dotted with flower beds and European-style garden lights. It is a good place for a leisurely stroll and a view of the Huangpu River.
The Bund, which extends from Jinling Road in the south to the Waibaidu Bridge over the Suzhou Creek in the north, is on the western bank of the 114 kilometer long Huangpu River, a tributary of the Yangtze River.
#Four: Oriental Pearl TV Tower
Towering high above Pudong New Area, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower has been the outstanding landmark of Shanghai since its completion in 1995. The tower is 468 m high, the highest in Asia and the third highest in the world, next to the 553–meter-high CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, and the 540-meter-high TV Tower in Ostankino Tower in Moscow, Russia.
The tower includes 15 spheres of different sizes at different levels creating an artistic conception of "large and small pearls dropping onto a jade plate". It has become a symbolic piece of architecture and a favorite sight for tourists in Shanghai.
#Five: Zhujiajiao Water Town
Zhujiajiao, Known as "the Venice of Shanghai", is a well-preserved ancient town in water country in Shanghai typical of southeast China. During Three Kingdom as appeared as a village. Nowadays old streets and architecture in the style of Ming and Qing periods can be found and local customs characteristic of water country can be observed. Zhujiajiao is noted for its archaic water country scenery typical of southeast China – old town, peacefulness, tranquility and elegance.

Shanghai Transformations
This city is a mess! No worries though, because it’s still the bustling social and business hub that regulars and newbie’s alike have grown to love. All of the great attractions and their gnat-like hawkers are ready for you.
Shanghai is a mess because much of the city is being torn down in order to create a cleaner, more modern and efficient version of itself.
You may ask "aren't all cities doing this to some extent or other?" and the answer would be yes, but. The state and city authorities are pulling out all the stops to renew the city for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. This is the city's equivalent of the '08 Olympics in Beijing.
The 2010 Expo will be held from May 1, 2010 to October 31, 2010. Organizers are expecting over 70 million visitors and they already have confirmations from 185 countries and 47 international organizations.
The majority of the World Expo sites will be located along the banks of the Huangpu River between the Nanpu and Lupu Bridges but all of the central districts are receiving facelifts to some extent.
This means there are day and night construction projects all over the city. The improved infrastructure and 'greening' of urban areas is their way of making the best possible first impression for all of those expected visitors.
So, remember that on your visit to Shanghai there may be a few construction zones or street projects that get in the way, but they are all coming together for the future face of an increasingly modern and growing Shanghai.

shanghai food streets

Is Shanghai in China safe because I heard that people are just taken off the streets and tortured?
For information by the government. And what about the food-is it usually safe to eat?
I would go further than the previous post and say that Shanghai, infact most of the major cities in China, are FAR safer than the cities of the west. I have been in many places around the world and this place is the safest I have felt.
As the previous poster said, don't wear a flashy rolex when you are drunk at 2am in a back street, and don't openly "flash" your cash! Be sensible and you will be more than safe!
I also have to disagree with the previous post! A lot of the side streets you can see them cooking so see the conditions that they are working in, whereas some of the "nice" places you can't! Don't discount these places, some of them provide excellent food at an excellent price. A good rule of thumb I go by here, "never eat in an empty restaurant". No matter how good or bad it looks, if its empty its usually empty for a reason!
You'll enjoy it here, and lets be honest you can eat in "nice" places at home! Go to the busy restaurants, share a Tsingtau with the locals (stay off the rice wine!!!) and participate in the culture rather than walking it by! You will be surprised, the chinese are great people and they will make you feel welcome, especially if you are trying to fit in rather than stand out!
Oh, one last thing, don't listen to all the BS people spread, 99% of it is untrue!
