the three gorges dam

What would happen if the three gorges dam collapsed?
the three gorges dam is the largest dam on earth, and it cost like a billion so if it breaks how much could it cost?
what would it do?
how many would it kill?
It would be an economic disaster for China, similar to what might happen for the US. if the Hoover Dam and Parker Dam and Glen Canyon Dam and others on the Colorado River were to collapse or the Aswan Dam in Egypt or other giant dams around the world.
There would also be a return to the frequent massive floods (now being controlled to a great extent by the dam) that has killed millions of people many times.
Therefore it is highly unlikely to happen as greater technology and safety features have been built into it than previous large dams.

yangtse river cruise

A short visit to China enabled me to fulfil a wish to travel on the finest ship currently sailing the Yangtse River. Launched in July 2008 the "Yangzi Explorer" offers a level of comfort not experienced before. It now runs between Chongqing and Yichang or vice versa taking 4 days/3 nights downstream and 5 days/4 nights upstream.
It takes in along the way the famous and dramatic Three Gorges and the Three Gorges Dam including a 4/5 hour run through its 5 huge lock chambers. Each one is over 60 feet wide and 900 feet long. Consisting of just 62 cabins including 24 suites it carries a maximum of 124 people although this number is rarely reached if cabins are occupied by single travellers. The deluxe cabins, the standard rooms if you like, are far from standard. At 27 Sqm they are the size of a hotel room. The deluxe cabins have a good size bathroom with marble walls and floors and a nice shower. There is plenty of space for a Queen sized bed, and a flat television screen on the wall means you have more space to move around or relax on the sofa. Every cabin has a large picture window and a balcony. The suites on board allow larger living space or room for a cocktail party perhaps if a group of friends or business clients are travelling together.
The Yangzi Explorer is designed to both individuals and families. Extra beds can be placed in the suites and even the deluxe cabins are interconnected allowing families to enjoy time together. The Explorer deck, located at the top of the ship, is split into an outside area with deck chairs and an enclosed lounge where you can relax in plumped cushioned chairs and large floor to ceiling windows offering snacks, tea and coffee during the day and cocktails in the evening. There is also a private dining room that can be booked. Also on board is a theatre where demonstrations during the cruise are given and films on China are screened. learn about tea, dumpling making, the Yangtse Three Gorge dam project, pearls calligraphy and snuff bottle painting. A quiet library is also available, perhaps after a treatment in the spa. During the cruise several excursions are made on shore. Exact excursions depend on water levels and nationalities aboard but may include village and school visits, boat trips on smaller vessels up some of the narrow tributary rivers and of course the Three Gorges Dam Project itself. Cuisine on board is international and included in the cruise price with lunch and dinner are house wines and beer. The Yangzi Explorer sails between mid-march and mid-November. Please refer to the China section on our website for suggested itineraries. Other cities can be added to create your very own tailor-made visit to China.
Following the cruise I flew to Beijing to visit three hotels, one of which was the new 5* luxury Aman at the Summer Palace. This is a super property with truly fine service and exquisite furniture and furnishings all within the boundaries of the old Summer Palace located on the outskirts of Beijing. Adjacent to the East Gate of the Summer Palace grounds, Aman at Summer Palace, Beijing is housed in a series of dwellings, most of which date back over one hundred years. Some of the original dwellings were used by guests of the Summer Palace awaiting an audience with the Empress Dowager Cixi at the turn of the twentieth century. You enter the property through an archway flanked by two huge red lacquered doors covered with brass studs.
here are 51 rooms and suites in total. The Guestrooms, mostly decorated in Ming Dynasty style with four-poster beds, are located in two new buildings by the front entrance. The spacious suites are also decorated in the Ming style. Some offer a combined living space and bedroom whilst others have a separate bedroom. Under the main courtyard are two underground levels where a large fitness room, spa and 25 m swimming pool are located. There are a number of food and beverage outlets serving both international and chinese cuisine, a fine selection of wines and a library. My favourite feature however is the private wooden door that leads directly through one of the walls from the resort to expose you to the secrets of the Summer Palace itself. A dawn encounter means that you will have the place virtually to yourself.
The 5* Commune by the Wall can be a tranquil haven after the hustle and bustle of the rest of China. Originally a project put together by Ms Zhang Xin, a Chinese architect, it brought together 12 other Asian architects with the aim of creating something contemporary but Asian.

3 gorges dam

Fishing is one of favorite past times or hobbies for many people. The thrill of having a big catch is the objective of this activity which makes it fun and exciting. There are many methods in catching fish and fly fishing is one of them.
Fly fishing is a very unique technique that uses artificial flies, fly rod and fly line. You could be able to catch fishes like salmon and trout. However, there are many fly anglers who use this method to catch other species such as carp, pike, pan fish, bass, snook, bonefish and red fish also. The fly line used is made up of plastic coating. Artificial flies come in different variants in terms of weight, size and color.
Most common natural materials used in making artificial flies are feathers or fur and horse hair connected to a hook. But recently, other types of materials are also used and have become very popular too. These flies are created to look attractive to the target species. The colors are chosen according to that of insects and baitfish of these species.
In later years, fly fishing became a popular sport too. Many clubs were established due to the increasing number of people taking up an interest on this activity. Many competitions were held that drew lots of participants from different places.
There are several fly fishing rivers identified suitable for such activity in the United States. Some of these rivers include Pit, Big Horn, Mc Cloud and the Green River in Flaming Gorge dam. The latter is the most popular among the rivers.
Green River naturally became famous because of its abundant trout. It is a perfect place for fly fishing not to mention that the river features a natural beauty making it a good place for camping.
Based on the records of the Division of Wildlife Resources, this river has a population of 20,000 fishes every mile. This ratio is simply advantageous both to beginners and pro fishers. There is little waiting time to catch fish with such abundance.
Green River is divided into three sections. The sections are assigned with letters A, B and C.
Section A is a seven mile stretch starting from the Flaming Gorge Dam to the Little Hole. There are more than a hundred thousand fishes in this section which makes it the most favorite among the three. There are available guides in the areas which can teach you fishing techniques as well as those areas where you can get a better catch. It is the favorite spot of beginners because it is easy to get a catch here. It is also a viable place for kayaking and rafting.
Section B is a nine mile stretch from Little Hole to Browns Park. It contains fewer fishes compared to Section A but sufficient enough to have a good catch. This is a good spot for fishers in the intermediate level. It is quite difficult to get a catch here that will require some acquired skills.
Section C is the most challenging. The fishes are wilder and spookier which makes it a favorite spot for highly skilled fishermen. It is normally not crowded here because only a few hobbyists will enjoy such a difficult catch. For the most challenging fly fishing experience, section B is the right place.
If you want to experience the adventure of fly fishing, it is important to visit any of the fly shops near the river so they could suggest which section is appropriate for your skills. They would also provide you with all the rules and regulations particular for fishing in Green River.

the three gorges

My two cruises along the Li River in Guilin and the Yangtze River are the most highlights in my fabulous 10 days china vacation. My trip starts from Beijing. After 3 days traveling there and a wonderful Beijing Duck dinner, we fly to Guilin and rest at Fubo hotel.
Guilin's scenery is quite different from Beijing. Not so modern and filled with more native soil feeling. The hills look so elegant. My tour guide is a lovely lady. She told us "if you come to china without visiting Guilin, your trip is not completed". Is it true?
My essence tour in Guilin starts at next morning after my breakfast. We drive about 40 minutes away from the city and start an excursion by boat along the Li River. The boat we took is a three levels one with an open deck on the top where I like to climb to enjoy the scenery along the bank or take photos. Along the river, we are inspired by the picturesque mountains, peaceful green fields, crystal-clear water, lush bamboos and villages with water buffaloes. The famous scenic spots like "Yearning for Husband Hill, Crown Cave, Painted Cliff, Reflection of Yellow Beach, Xingping Town, Five Fingers Hill, etc." are so pleasing to the eyes and the mind. The most interesting part is we come to a small village for 1 hour to visit a nearby school after we arrive at Yangshuo. I even get two grapefruits from the local students as gifts. They all look so lovely. I like the way to communicate with local chinese directly.
In all, this 4-5 hours sailing was a fabulous trip and we were enjoyed so much and eager to tell more people to do this.
The popular food in Guilin is local noodle. It is quite different. If you visit there, don't forget to taste it.
Yangtze Cruise is the last destination in my 10 days trip. I want to have a look of the largest water conservancy project- Three Gorges Dam.
Normally there are downstream and upstream cruising routes available. Starting from chongqing to Yichang, or Wuhan and Shanghai is downstream where starting from Wuhan, Shangahai or Yichang to Chongqing is upstream. Upstream direction needs one day more on the ship. I choose to leave China from Shanghai so downstream is suitable for me.
The ship we took was Yangtze Paradise, a ship with five decks and houses 196 passengers and 120 crews. The ship is always known as "the flowing hotel." On the ship we get many Chinese style entertainments such as the lesson about Chinese painting and calligraphy, pearls, Jades. I just try Taiji in the morning. It is not so difficult to try Taiji. There are also traditional folk performance at the nighttime. It is really big fun on this trip. We are not only to view the beautiful scenery but also get more friends from different countries on the board.
The daily shore excursion to Fengdu, Shennong stream and Three gorges dam site also make us exciting. We take a smaller wooden boat called "pea-pod boat" drifting along Shennong Stream. Shennong Stream is a small tributary of Yangtze River with 60 kilometers long, popular with its special virtues of serenity, uniqueness, primitiveness and wilderness. We are quite excited to view the groups of monkeys sporting among the trees, ancient hanging coffins, and the minority people.
Three Gorges Dam is the largest water conservancy project ever undertaken by man. It will be 2,335 meters long, 185 meters high, 18 meters wide on the top and 130 meters wide at the bottom. Upon arrival at Sandouping, we have a chance to get a bird's eye view of the magnificent project from the observation deck. We also observe the five-step ship lock, the diversion canal, the dam in construction, and the power station.

Yangtze cruise laundry service is available on all 4 and 5 star cruise ships, so you don't need to worry about running out of clean clothe. chinese local ferries will not have laundry service available. You can fill the laundry request form, and put your clothes into the bag in the morning before you go out for the excursions. By the time you return to your cabin in the evening, your clothe shall be ready. The cost is about the same as hotels. Cruise ships like Victoria Cruises will charge from $8 to $20USD. The price sheet is available in your Yangtze cabin room.
However please note that there is no ironing boards in the cabin.
Many people travel china for about 2 weeks, the cruise ships on the Yangtze river are about 3 or 4 nights. A sample itinerary is Beijing (Great Wall) - Xian (Terracotta Warriors) - Yangtze River cruise 3 nights from Chongqing to Yichang (Three Gorges, and Three Gorges Dam) - Shanghai. Many find the 3 or 4 nights on-board are good time to relax; and a chance to do laundry.
The full capacity of the Yangtze cruise are around 250 passengers, if you have already accumulated lots of laundry to do, we suggest you do the day when you check-in. Otherwise it may take long to get your clothe back. Most of the cabins will not allow you to do laundry in the bathroom because the basin may not strong enough. Also hairdryer is not allowed to be used to dry the clothe yourself.
Happy cruising!

Yichang Tours

China is one of those countries that has intrigued me for years, but I’ve never really been sure about how to visit it. One obvious concern is its distance from me. Naturally, there is also the massive language barrier; it isn’t exactly like traveling to Australia. In South America and Europe one can generally get around with English and a (poorly spoken) mix of some other Romance language. When I was in Italy I used a strange homemade amalgamation of Spanish and Latin, the two languages I took in high school, and I was usually able to get myself understood. Mind you, I got a lot of laughs too, but I the important thing was that I could express myself in a reasonable fashion. I think my ability to clearly express myself in rural China would, to say the least, be drastically less.
Nonetheless, China is home to a couple of major attractions and spectacles that I am dying to see. First and foremost, no surprise here, is the Great Wall of China. However, a close second is the Three Gorges Dam, located near Yichang, China. The dam is, after the Great Wall, the second largest construction project China has ever undertaken in its entire (rich, long, and varied) history. The scale of the project is truly mind-boggling. For starters, the towering, thick wall of concrete spans nearly 1.5 miles. The project used just a hair under 1 BILLION CUBIC FEET of concrete. The chinese were able to drastically alter the very landscape of their country. It is a truly stunning feat of engineering.
While the debate rages on as to whether or not this is beneficial to the environment, I would merely like to see it in person and admire what human beings can accomplish when they put their minds to something. It may save tons of carbon from being released into the environment (through China burning its coal reserves.) It may also displace millions of people and destroy biodiversity. I’m not exactly qualified to speak definitively on the subject. I just know that I want to see it, because the thing is BIG.
The best way to see the Three Gorges would have to be by boat. The geography of China makes this an ideal way to see as much of the country as possible. You can cruise the Yangtze River and in only seven days go all the way from Chongqing to Shanghai. That is covering roughly 2000 kilometers of China, all in the span of a single week. This not only seems like a manageable vacation that won’t jeopardize your career, but also one with other benefits as well. On a boat you can enjoy the presence of an English-speaking guide while simultaneously avoiding horrific bus trips from crowded city to crowded city.
The mighty Yangtze, the third largest river in the world (after the Nile and the Amazon), is a major cultural and economic force in China, and it really is no wonder as to why it is called the “Main Street of China.” If and when I finally get the money to make the trip, the Yangtze is on my to-do list. China is undergoing incredible, rapid change, and I feel that if I don’t make it in five years, the place will be so utterly different as to be nearly unrecognizable.

yangtse river

How Much Is A Species Worth?
Scientists recently declared that the chinese White River Dolphin was extinct after living for many million years. The key reason is severe pollution of the Yangtse River. I am so mad that I want to sue the Chinese government on behalf of Mother Nature....Realistically, how much is an animal species worth?
This beautiful dolphin was once called the "the goddess of the Yangtze." How can a society let this happen to a species they once considered culturally important?
There are several schools of thought on what the value of individual species are, but I find that almost all of them have some basic flaw.
Lets say that when there was just one river dolphin left science discovered that they carried a cure in their system that would cure all cancer. What is the river dolphin's value following that realization?
It turns out that the addition of wolves to Yellowstone has been good for the watershed -- specifically streams and creeks (wolves keep the elk moving along and doing less damage to specific sections of water or shoreline). What is the value of that?
I think it's well past the time that we begin to see how interconnected we all our to this planet and that the loss of an one species lessens all of us significantly. Well beyond a monetary value.

three gorges dam river

explain why the yangtze river is being dammed at the three gorges?
As with manyy damns, there is controversy over the costs and benefits of the Three Gorges Dam. Although there are economic benefits from flood control and hydroelectric power, there are also concerns about the future of over 1.9 million people who will be displaced by the rising waters[2], the loss of many valuable archaeological and cultural sites, as well as the effects on the environment.
Sun Yat-sen first proposed building a dam on the Yangtze River in 1919 for power generation purposes and the National Defense Planning Commission under the Kuomintang made the first survey of the proposed site in 1932, but the idea was shelved due to unfavorable political and economic conditions. Major floods resurrected the idea and the PRC government adopted it in 1954 for flood control.
The amount of power generated by the dam in 2009 was originally anticipated to supply about 10% of China's electricity needs, but with China's rapidly growing economy it is only projected to produce approximately 3% at the end of 2006[4]. In fact, the dam is predicted to produce 18.2 million kilowatts of electricity. According to a recent Discovery Channel special on the Three Gorges Dam, it will supply enough electricity to power a city four times larger than Los Angeles. That is a lot of energy
Cities such as Shanghai need ever-increasing electricity. With 26 hydro turbines generating up to 18 gigawatts of electricity—the equivalent of roughly eighteen coal power stations or 11,000 barrels of oil per hour—the Dam will help reduce this power shortage.
