why and how do Japanese kids always look so cool?
I know this sounds like a stupid question maybe. And I'm not trying to stereotype. But even when I see just normal Japanese kids on a flight to Shanghai or whatever, they just have this look. Like they are cool, but they're not trying to be cool. I know there is that crazy district in Tokyo where kids wear all kinds of crazy fashions-- I'm not talking about that. I'm just talking about how Japanese kids have this like stopic cool, cute, put-together, organized look about them. Like they have the perfect outfits in really subtle ways and their hair is always cute. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm tall, white, skinny, and I have thin brown hair and blue eyes. Obviously, I'm not Asian. But how can I get some of that cute style without just looking like a poser or looking absolutely ridiculous and nowhere near the style I'm going for?? HELP! thanks everybody....!
i know what you mean. there is just something so 'cool' about that culture. the kids are amazing. im not sure how to translate that other than confidence and an sence of repect for your image.

What is your opinion, or experience in Shanghai either as a visitor or an expat.? Did it meet ur expectations?
I swore I answered this identical question yesterday.
Shanghai is cool. Very modern. Imagine New York meets China meets Paris. I personally prefer the old neighborhoods in Shanghai, but they have mostly been bulldozed in the past few years. Now it's all glitter and glam. The thing about Shanghai is that since last century it has always had a reputation as being a place for expats in China who don't really want to be in China. So over the decades it has been developed and westernized (just like Hong Kong) to the point that it really doesn't seem like China, compared to the rest of the country anyways. But that may be a good thing depending on your personal objective. But now matter what you'll dig it. I think Beijing is cooler though, because Beijing is the perfect blend of ancient history and modern progress, plus Beijing has a dope live music and arts scene. And Beijing's nightlife rocks way more than Shanghai. But Shanghai has hotter girls. Anyway, have fun!!!

Is Shanghai in China safe because I heard that people are just taken off the streets and tortured?
For information by the government. And what about the food-is it usually safe to eat?
I would go further than the previous post and say that Shanghai, infact most of the major cities in China, are FAR safer than the cities of the west. I have been in many places around the world and this place is the safest I have felt.
As the previous poster said, don't wear a flashy rolex when you are drunk at 2am in a back street, and don't openly "flash" your cash! Be sensible and you will be more than safe!
I also have to disagree with the previous post! A lot of the side streets you can see them cooking so see the conditions that they are working in, whereas some of the "nice" places you can't! Don't discount these places, some of them provide excellent food at an excellent price. A good rule of thumb I go by here, "never eat in an empty restaurant". No matter how good or bad it looks, if its empty its usually empty for a reason!
You'll enjoy it here, and lets be honest you can eat in "nice" places at home! Go to the busy restaurants, share a Tsingtau with the locals (stay off the rice wine!!!) and participate in the culture rather than walking it by! You will be surprised, the chinese are great people and they will make you feel welcome, especially if you are trying to fit in rather than stand out!
Oh, one last thing, don't listen to all the BS people spread, 99% of it is untrue!
