on the yangtze river

The bustling metropolis of Shanghai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Originally formed as a hub for the fishing and textiles industry, its prime location along the banks of the Yangtze River allowed it to evolve into a prominent port town in China.

It is one of the oldest cities in China, home to a variety of both old and modern attractions for travellers to explore. From museums to national landmarks, travellers are spoilt for choice.

A modern attraction that is gradually becoming synonymous with the city’s identity, similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris is the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai. Constructed between 1991 and 1995 it is one of the tallest completed towers in Asia. Its modern design and imposing height make it stand out as a beacon amongst the more conventional buildings in Shanghai’s Business District.

Situated near the trendy Bund District on the banks of the Huangpu River, the Oriental Pearl Tower is more than just a simple communications tower. The towers structure comprises of 11 spheres of varying size. The highest sphere is known as the Space Module. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and the various river tributaries that crisscross through Shanghai. Within this module are a revolving restaurant, discotheque and relaxing piano lounge. The restaurant serves both international and traditional chinese cuisine and completes one revolution every hour.

The smaller spheres in-between the central base sphere and Space Module are made up of more than 15 observation decks offering varying views of the Shanghai cityscape.

The central base sphere is home to Space City a science fiction in-door museum cum theme park. It houses a variety of interesting galleries pertaining to space and man’s exploits into the cosmos along with a laser theatre. For those who wish to hold a social or business gathering with a unique perspective over Shanghai, the base sphere offers a convention size hall able to cater to a multitude of events.

The Oriental Pearl Tower benefits from a central location near Shanghai’s Business District and can be accessed from all round the city via several modes of transport. There are dedicated bus routes that converge at the Oriental Pearl Tower from several key locations, including a Maglev and MRT stop.

The discerning traveller looking for a more upmarket hotel in Shanghai will discover many to choose from. However once you have separated the wheat from the chaff, one in particular stands out as a prime example of a luxury boutique hotel in Shanghai. The Langham Yangtze Boutique Shanghai offers an exclusive centrally located abode in the heart of Shanghai. Offering a range of world class amenities and services to suit your every whim and desire, The Langham Yangtze Boutique Shanghai strives to ensure that your stay is pleasurable and relaxing.

the three gorges dam
What would happen if the three gorges dam collapsed?

the three gorges dam is the largest dam on earth, and it cost like a billion so if it breaks how much could it cost?
what would it do?
how many would it kill?

It would be an economic disaster for China, similar to what might happen for the US. if the Hoover Dam and Parker Dam and Glen Canyon Dam and others on the Colorado River were to collapse or the Aswan Dam in Egypt or other giant dams around the world.

There would also be a return to the frequent massive floods (now being controlled to a great extent by the dam) that has killed millions of people many times.

Therefore it is highly unlikely to happen as greater technology and safety features have been built into it than previous large dams.

china population

As old as China is, it has seen many political structures and education platforms. Here is a guide to education in China as it stands today.

We all know that both the government and economic approaches of China are based on the communist way of thinking. While foreign to most Westerners (in fact, to most everyone else in the world), the communist way of life has been the basis for much of China's current ways of living. While this type of government definitely affects how the population of China lives, it also affects some other important aspects of the country. One way that this can be seen is in the education of people in China.

The education approach in China might be seen by some (especially those in the United States and Europe) as being short. China only requires that each child has nine years of formal education – this is far less than the amount of schooling that is seen in other countries, such as the 13 years in the US and 14 years in Canada. The types of schooling offered in China are broken into three areas: basic education, higher education and adult education. Basic education starts with preschool or kindergarten, which lasts longer than it does in the US, with children entering this schooling program at around age three, and staying in preschool until the age of six. At age six, children enter primary education (elementary school). After completing elementary school, kids are then put into one of two types of secondary education: either academic (preparing the students for higher education) or vocational secondary education which prepares the students for work.

China does also offer higher education. Students who attend college have the choice of going to a short-cycle school (two to three years, equivalent to an associates' degree), or a regular college which lasts three to four years and can end in a bachelor's degree. Masters and PhD programs are also available. Finally, adult education (which also falls partially under higher education) offers programs such as Peasants' Primary schools, Workers' Primary Schools and literacy training. These types of adult education are aimed at adults that may not have gone through any formal schooling in their childhood – and they also include places such as correspondence colleges and specialized schools for different industries and jobs.

The education platform in China is well organized, and while not exactly like schools found in the US, definitely rivals the schooling found in the rest of the (non-communist) world. Both adults and children are able to educate themselves to further their careers and working life.

about the yangtze river
Does anyone think that the extinction of the Yangtze River dolphin is unacceptable?

Does anyone else but me think that the extinction of the Yangtze River Dolphin is unacceptable, and that we as sentient beings must curtail this murderous enterprise of killing things for more farming areas when we have perfectly good ones already? We ve already killed about 3 species of big cat!

Human progress and industrializing does put a heavy burden on all species of our planet. And sadly the Yangtze River dolphin is another casualty of China's economic success and our desire in the West for cheap goods.

the yangtze river

Shanghai is a bustling, cosmopolitan city in the heart of a fast emerging global power house.  Renowned for its party atmosphere and fun-loving populace, Shanghai retains its place as an Asian Monte Carlo of sorts while its image has taken a wholesome turn for the better in the recent past as a tourist destination for the masses. A modern day metropolis to the core, Shanghai has merged its traditional values to encompass the sky piercing developments such as the Pudong skyline that characterize the city’s vibrant landscape.

As the largest city in ever changing China, Shanghai has a lot to offer the world, home to such well-known attractions as the City God Temple and the Bund. Other points of interest include the Oriental Pearl Tower and the sprawling Garden of Contentment (Yu Yuan Garden).

A trip to Shanghai would be amiss if one didn’t indulge in a river cruise along picturesque Huangpu River. The biggest river in Shanghai, Huangpu River is a 97km long waterway that cuts across mainland china. With the name meaning ‘Yellow Bank Riverâ€, it divides Shanghai in to two quarters, Puxi to the west  and Pudong to the east much like the Hudson divides New York city . A lower level stem of famed Yangtze River, Huangpu is 400 metres wide and nine metres deep. A cruise along the river will take visitors from The Bund to Wusong Mouth where if lucky, they will witness the culmination of the yellow colored water from the Yangtze, greyish-blue water from Huangpu River and blue colored water from the East China Sea  during the tidal rise. Known as 'Three Waters Mingling Together' this wonderous occurrence is one of the main highlights of the river cruise. When traversing across the river one also gets to witness the architectural divide between the two quarters of Shanghai as well as the Yangpu and Nanpu bridges in between which the Oriental Pearl Tower is situated.  Night time tours of the river are extremely popular among seasoned guests as the lights from the city reflects beautifully off the surface of the river to create a magical atmosphere.

Centrally located, Millennium Hongqiao Hotel Shanghai is ideal for those who wish to have unparalleled access to all the city has to offer. Charming and cozy, this luxurious Shanghai hotel serves as the perfect base for holidaymakers and business travelers alike.

Tea is the world's most consumed beverage next to water. It is good for the body with many health benefits.

Tea was originally served as a medicine before it became a largely consumed beverage. It can be traced from the early chinese medicine and botany. The tea plant was originally grown in southern China.

Tea can relieve fatigue, delight the soul, strengthen the will, and repair the eyesight. It was not only applied as an internal drug but also administered externally in the form of paste used in alleviating pains caused by rheumatism. The Buddhists extensively consumed tea in keeping them alert during long hours of deep meditation. The Taoists regarded tea as a substantial component
of immortality.

Tea was adverted to in the classics with different names such as Tou, Chung, Tseh, Kha and Ming. This beverage became a favorite among the dwellers in the valley of the Yangtse-Kiang on the fourth and fifth century. It was during this era that the new ideogram Cha was made up. The southern dynasties' poets imparted some pieces of their fervid idolization of the tea.

The emperors of the Chinese empire used the "froth of the liquid jade" in bestowing some rare preparation of the tea leaves on their senior ministers as a pay back for their high services. Even so, the way of drinking tea at this period in time was extremely primitive. The leaves of the tea were steamed, beaten in a mortal, formed into a cake, and then boiled with salt, rice, ginger, orange peel, milk, spices and sometimes together with onions also.

The customs among the different Mongolian tribes and Tibetans who make peculiar syrup of these ingredients was obtained and remain until now. The survival of the ancient procedure of drinking tea points to the use of slices of lemon by the Russians who learned to get tea from the Chinese caravan inn.

A hand of a master is necessary to bring the noblest quality of tea. The Tang dynasty's Luwuh helped in emancipating tea from its primitive state to its ultimate idealization. Luwuh developed the Code of Tea in his famous work the "Chaking" (The Holy Scripture of Tea). The culmination of tea-ideals was shown in the Japanese tea ceremony.

Tea is the dried and treated leaves of one species of plant known as Camellia sinensis or Thea sinensis. Herbal infusions or herbal teas are not really teas rather dried herbs or flowers. Though tea plant has only one species, its major variety is classified into three.

The first is China. It generally flourishes at high altitudes and has small leaves. The second is India (or Assam, with larger leaves thrives at low altitudes. The third is Hybrid with characteristics of both Indian and Chinese tea.

Processing tea has four main methods, produces four different tea types: white tea, green tea, black tea and oolong tea.

White tea simply is the leaves of the processed camellia sinensis. It is the least common type of tea. It does not undergo any oxidation process. White teas are instantly steamed or fired after drying them for a certain period of time. There are no bruising, breaking or rolling needed.

Green tea is processed using similar method with that of white tea. The leaves are sometimes let to wither for 8 to 24 hours after they are plucked. It allows most water to evaporate. Then, the leaves are pan fried or steamed to neutralize the enzymes. The leaves are then rolled up in different ways and tightness. Next, a final drying completes the process. The tea has a green color since no oxidation happened.

Processing black tea involves full oxidation. The leaves are plucked, laid out for 8 to 24 hours, and then rolled to crack the leaves' surface up to begin the oxidation process. The leaves are allowed to oxidize completely making the leaves' color turn deep black.

In processing oolong tea, the dried tea leaves are tossed in baskets until bruises appear in the edges of the leaves. The bruising makes the leaves oxidize partially because only some of the enzymes are exposed to the atmosphere. The leaves are then finally dried, sorted, graded and carefully packaged.
