yangtse river cruises

A short visit to China enabled me to fulfil a wish to travel on the finest ship currently sailing the Yangtse River. Launched in July 2008 the "Yangzi Explorer" offers a level of comfort not experienced before. It now runs between Chongqing and Yichang or vice versa taking 4 days/3 nights downstream and 5 days/4 nights upstream.
It takes in along the way the famous and dramatic Three Gorges and the Three Gorges Dam including a 4/5 hour run through its 5 huge lock chambers. Each one is over 60 feet wide and 900 feet long. Consisting of just 62 cabins including 24 suites it carries a maximum of 124 people although this number is rarely reached if cabins are occupied by single travellers. The deluxe cabins, the standard rooms if you like, are far from standard. At 27 Sqm they are the size of a hotel room. The deluxe cabins have a good size bathroom with marble walls and floors and a nice shower. There is plenty of space for a Queen sized bed, and a flat television screen on the wall means you have more space to move around or relax on the sofa. Every cabin has a large picture window and a balcony. The suites on board allow larger living space or room for a cocktail party perhaps if a group of friends or business clients are travelling together.
The Yangzi Explorer is designed to both individuals and families. Extra beds can be placed in the suites and even the deluxe cabins are interconnected allowing families to enjoy time together. The Explorer deck, located at the top of the ship, is split into an outside area with deck chairs and an enclosed lounge where you can relax in plumped cushioned chairs and large floor to ceiling windows offering snacks, tea and coffee during the day and cocktails in the evening. There is also a private dining room that can be booked. Also on board is a theatre where demonstrations during the cruise are given and films on China are screened. learn about tea, dumpling making, the Yangtse Three Gorge dam project, pearls calligraphy and snuff bottle painting. A quiet library is also available, perhaps after a treatment in the spa. During the cruise several excursions are made on shore. Exact excursions depend on water levels and nationalities aboard but may include village and school visits, boat trips on smaller vessels up some of the narrow tributary rivers and of course the Three Gorges Dam Project itself. Cuisine on board is international and included in the cruise price with lunch and dinner are house wines and beer. The Yangzi Explorer sails between mid-march and mid-November. Please refer to the China section on our website for suggested itineraries. Other cities can be added to create your very own tailor-made visit to China.
Following the cruise I flew to Beijing to visit three hotels, one of which was the new 5* luxury Aman at the Summer Palace. This is a super property with truly fine service and exquisite furniture and furnishings all within the boundaries of the old Summer Palace located on the outskirts of Beijing. Adjacent to the East Gate of the Summer Palace grounds, Aman at Summer Palace, Beijing is housed in a series of dwellings, most of which date back over one hundred years. Some of the original dwellings were used by guests of the Summer Palace awaiting an audience with the Empress Dowager Cixi at the turn of the twentieth century. You enter the property through an archway flanked by two huge red lacquered doors covered with brass studs.
here are 51 rooms and suites in total. The Guestrooms, mostly decorated in Ming Dynasty style with four-poster beds, are located in two new buildings by the front entrance. The spacious suites are also decorated in the Ming style. Some offer a combined living space and bedroom whilst others have a separate bedroom. Under the main courtyard are two underground levels where a large fitness room, spa and 25 m swimming pool are located. There are a number of food and beverage outlets serving both international and chinese cuisine, a fine selection of wines and a library. My favourite feature however is the private wooden door that leads directly through one of the walls from the resort to expose you to the secrets of the Summer Palace itself. A dawn encounter means that you will have the place virtually to yourself.
The 5* Commune by the Wall can be a tranquil haven after the hustle and bustle of the rest of China. Originally a project put together by Ms Zhang Xin, a Chinese architect, it brought together 12 other Asian architects with the aim of creating something contemporary but Asian.

three gorge

Morocco is a country of unique beauty ranging from the heavily forested heights of the Atlas Mountains to the sandy plains of the countries interior. One of the most beautiful areas of Morocco is an area known as Dades Valley. The area is called the Red Valley because of the color of the rock formations that make up this interesting and refreshing view of Morocco. While there are no true tourist attractions in this area, the valley and the gorges around it are enough to soothe that part of your soul that needs to experience some wild natural sights.
This area of Morocco is the perfect place for photographic opportunities and it is not limited to the time of year you visit. Everything here is a vivid red, green, and white and once you leave the Boumalne de Dades and enter into the gorge proper, you will be entering a world that is as mysterious as it is beautiful. There are small villages throughout the area and you can only wonder what has happened over the centuries between them all. Were there blood feuds between families? Rival romances? Intrigues in this forgotten part of the world? You may never know, but your imagination will be triggered as you meander your way along the serpentine roads that lead to Dades Valley.
Getting to Dades Valley allows you to see how conditions change from green and lush to red and barren within a few hours. As you drive into the valley, the roads become narrower. You will definitely need a four-wheel drive to traverse these roads. One of the first places that will greet you as you enter the valley itself is an old Kasbah, Glaoui that once belonged to the former ruling chiefs of the area.
Visitors to Dades Valley will want to stop at the many settlements found along the mountain climb. The people here are welcoming and the scenery is fascinating when you consider the small gardens in front of the houses that are rich and colorful, compared to the red and tan of the rocks along the valley’s walls. The shift in the landscape is so dramatic that it easily takes your breath away, and no photograph could truly do it justice.
As you drive towards Ait Oudinar located deeper in the valley itself, you will be able to see how the rocks formations of the valley have twisted and turned into interesting and colorful structures. The red color of the rock has not faded here and as you move deeper into the shade of the valley you will come to Ait Youl, one of the largest fortified ksours in the valley. The mountains protect this fortified dwelling and it in turn was used to protect the fertile fields that ran along the river outside the pass from invaders and marauders.
Moving past Ait Youl, you will come to Ait Oudinar, an hour from the entrance of the valley at Boumalne du Dades. The valley has narrowed to a full-blown gorge with the valley walls towering above you. You will see that the rocks have lost a lot of the red coloring and the whole natural landscape has changed. Many visitors stop here and enjoy the small hotels and cafes located in the gorge’s bottom before turning around and heading back the way they came. The more adventurous visitors, however, will continue on, usually on foot to see the rest of the valley and make their way to the Todra Gorge. If you are brave enough to take on the winding roads in your 4x4, then it is advisable to do it with a local guide. You will be rewarded with some great views of the valleys below as you exit this part of the valley.
Todra Gorge
The walk to Todra Gorge from the Dades Valley can be done in a day. The distance to Msemrir, the last village in the area, is about 63 kilometers from Ait Oudinar and easily done by trained walkers and hikers who wish to experience this aspect of Morocco. The Todra Gorge is one of the most dramatic sites in the country, cutting through the mountains with only 10-meter wide passages in places squeezed between 300-meter high walls.
Sunlight in the gorge only hits the bottom in the morning and the trail through this remarkable canyon is beside a cold river that rushes through. Temperatures can go to freezing in the gorge, so visitors are advised to walk the gorge starting at early morning so that they can return to Ait Oudinar before nightfall. The gorge is less than 600 meters long and there are actually some people who live there. There is a small restaurant and hotel located there, making staying the night in the gorge a little more convenient and definitely a worthy experience.
While you may wish to photograph the Todra Gorge, keep in mind that it will be hard to truly capture the unique beauty that the gorge provides even with a wide-angle lens. The best photographs should be taken between 8am and 1pm when sunlight is still present.
Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge provide visitors to Morocco a unique environment to explore that is away from the hustle and bustle of the cities and beaches. It is the perfect getaway for nature buffs and hikers, and it provides the traveler with a getaway filled with interesting photographic opportunity.

There's an old Chinese adage that says: "People view food as the most important". That pretty much sums up my view on food as well. I love to eat all types of food and cuisine, and I especially enjoy the hot and spicy food of the Szechuan province in China.
China's food and cuisine has had a long history. The five flavors of spicy, sweet, bitter, sour, and salty has been used in Chinese cooking over 3,000 years ago. Today, traditional Chinese food ranks among the worlds best and most popular. Authentic Chinese cuisine focus on 3 key aspects: taste, color (display), and fragrance, and Chinese cooking is very particular about cutting style and cooking temperature.
The official currency of China is the RMB (RenMinBi), or translated as "the people's currency". The basic unit is the Yuan (or kuai), or equivalent to what we call the "dollar" in North America. Next unit down is the "Jiao" (or also "mao"), or "10 cents". Finally, the smallest unit is the "Fen", equivalent to our "penny".

the yangtze river

Shanghai is a bustling, cosmopolitan city in the heart of a fast emerging global power house. Renowned for its party atmosphere and fun-loving populace, Shanghai retains its place as an Asian Monte Carlo of sorts while its image has taken a wholesome turn for the better in the recent past as a tourist destination for the masses. A modern day metropolis to the core, Shanghai has merged its traditional values to encompass the sky piercing developments such as the Pudong skyline that characterize the city’s vibrant landscape.
As the largest city in ever changing China, Shanghai has a lot to offer the world, home to such well-known attractions as the City God Temple and the Bund. Other points of interest include the Oriental Pearl Tower and the sprawling Garden of Contentment (Yu Yuan Garden).
A trip to Shanghai would be amiss if one didn’t indulge in a river cruise along picturesque Huangpu River. The biggest river in Shanghai, Huangpu River is a 97km long waterway that cuts across mainland china. With the name meaning ‘Yellow Bank Riverâ€, it divides Shanghai in to two quarters, Puxi to the west  and Pudong to the east much like the Hudson divides New York city . A lower level stem of famed Yangtze River, Huangpu is 400 metres wide and nine metres deep. A cruise along the river will take visitors from The Bund to Wusong Mouth where if lucky, they will witness the culmination of the yellow colored water from the Yangtze, greyish-blue water from Huangpu River and blue colored water from the East China Sea during the tidal rise. Known as 'Three Waters Mingling Together' this wonderous occurrence is one of the main highlights of the river cruise. When traversing across the river one also gets to witness the architectural divide between the two quarters of Shanghai as well as the Yangpu and Nanpu bridges in between which the Oriental Pearl Tower is situated. Night time tours of the river are extremely popular among seasoned guests as the lights from the city reflects beautifully off the surface of the river to create a magical atmosphere.
Centrally located, Millennium Hongqiao Hotel Shanghai is ideal for those who wish to have unparalleled access to all the city has to offer. Charming and cozy, this luxurious Shanghai hotel serves as the perfect base for holidaymakers and business travelers alike.

world famous river
There are several dams built along the path of that river which would complete your sentence nicely. The most well known being the Three Gorges Dam. The Gezhouba Dam is also on the river and if it is ever completed the Xiluodu Dam will span a major tributary of the river.

China is one of those countries that has intrigued me for years, but I’ve never really been sure about how to visit it. One obvious concern is its distance from me. Naturally, there is also the massive language barrier; it isn’t exactly like traveling to Australia. In South America and Europe one can generally get around with English and a (poorly spoken) mix of some other Romance language. When I was in Italy I used a strange homemade amalgamation of Spanish and Latin, the two languages I took in high school, and I was usually able to get myself understood. Mind you, I got a lot of laughs too, but I the important thing was that I could express myself in a reasonable fashion. I think my ability to clearly express myself in rural China would, to say the least, be drastically less.
Nonetheless, China is home to a couple of major attractions and spectacles that I am dying to see. First and foremost, no surprise here, is the Great Wall of China. However, a close second is the Three Gorges Dam, located near Yichang, China. The dam is, after the Great Wall, the second largest construction project China has ever undertaken in its entire (rich, long, and varied) history. The scale of the project is truly mind-boggling. For starters, the towering, thick wall of concrete spans nearly 1.5 miles. The project used just a hair under 1 BILLION CUBIC FEET of concrete. The chinese were able to drastically alter the very landscape of their country. It is a truly stunning feat of engineering.
While the debate rages on as to whether or not this is beneficial to the environment, I would merely like to see it in person and admire what human beings can accomplish when they put their minds to something. It may save tons of carbon from being released into the environment (through China burning its coal reserves.) It may also displace millions of people and destroy biodiversity. I’m not exactly qualified to speak definitively on the subject. I just know that I want to see it, because the thing is BIG.
The best way to see the Three Gorges would have to be by boat. The geography of China makes this an ideal way to see as much of the country as possible. You can cruise the Yangtze River and in only seven days go all the way from Chongqing to Shanghai. That is covering roughly 2000 kilometers of China, all in the span of a single week. This not only seems like a manageable vacation that won’t jeopardize your career, but also one with other benefits as well. On a boat you can enjoy the presence of an English-speaking guide while simultaneously avoiding horrific bus trips from crowded city to crowded city.
The mighty Yangtze, the third largest river in the world (after the Nile and the Amazon), is a major cultural and economic force in China, and it really is no wonder as to why it is called the “Main Street of China.” If and when I finally get the money to make the trip, the Yangtze is on my to-do list. China is undergoing incredible, rapid change, and I feel that if I don’t make it in five years, the place will be so utterly different as to be nearly unrecognizable.
