First Olympic Torch Lit - Beijing Keeps the Fires Alive

The Olympic Torch is a symbol of the Olympics Games. Its origins were in a myth about stealing the fire for the torch from the Greek God Zeus by Prometheus.

Prometheus was a Greek Titan and after stealing the fire was punished by Zeus. Prometheus was also the brother of another Greek Titan named Atlas, who was punished by Zeus for siding with his brother and was forced to hold up the sky.

But let's get back to the origin of the first Olympic torch.

The Modern Olympic Games were inaugurated in Athens in 1896, and are held at the beginning of every Olympiad

Of course the Olympic torch traces its history back to ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics to honor Zeus.

The idea of moving the Olympic torch via a relay system from Olympia to the Olympic began with the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.
