shanghai hotels bund

Stretching along the Zhongshan Road and skirting the western shores of Huangpu River of the Huangpu District of Shanghai, China is a very popular tourist destination called - The Bund, which encompasses buildings and quayside areas of the former international settlement of Shanghai. Whether you are a history or an architecture enthusiast or simply fond of historical sites, the Bund will provide an ideal spot to begin your expedition. The area first began as a settlement for British and later was joined by the Americans, forming an international settlement. There was a boom in the chinese economy between 19th and 20th century where the Bund became a key financial center of East Asia. And by 1940 the area was already thriving with the headquarters of some major financial firms of China. This one mile long Bund went under a big transformation during the 1950s but again was restored between the ‘70s and ‘80s. In the ‘90s the Zhongshan Road was expanded to 10 lanes, trimming some of the parks and ferry quays adjoining the Bund. If you take a sightseeing tour across the Bund, you can see various buildings portraying western classical and contemporary styles towards the west side of Zhongshan Road. And if you tread along the Bund to its northern end, you will arrive at the smallest and oldest triangular shaped park of Shanghai - the Huangpu Park. Huangpu Park houses an impressive 24meter tall structure called ‘The Monument to the People’s Heroes’, resembling 3 upright rifles. This memorial was built in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives during the freedom fight of China. You can also drop by at The Bund Historical Museum in the same premises, where they exhibit many historical snapshots of the Bund. Towards the east of the Bund you’ll see a hefty embankment constructed during ‘90s, to prevent the flood waters from invading the city. And when you arrive at the Nanjing Road intersection, you will also spot a bronze statue of the first Communist Mayor of Shanghai - Chen Yi. Among the plethora of buildings that faces the Bund, you will be able to spot the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Bank, The Bank of China, The Customs House, and the Russell & Co building to name but a few. These buildings offer an exceptional array of architectural styles ranging from Edwardian to Beaux-Arts, Neo-Renaissance to Neo-Gothic, Art Deco, and even the fusions of Greek-Revival and Neo-Classicist. Shanghai is a city visited by millions of tourists every year. Hence there are myriads of Shanghai hotels to suite the budget of all travelers alike. You will discover numerous luxury hotels in Shanghai such as Langham Yangtze Boutique Shanghai The offering outstanding services and modern conveniences for the tourists visiting the city. You can also savor sumptuous cosmopolitan delicacies during your stay at this classy Shanghai hotel.

on the yangtze river

The bustling metropolis of Shanghai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Originally formed as a hub for the fishing and textiles industry, its prime location along the banks of the Yangtze River allowed it to evolve into a prominent port town in China.

It is one of the oldest cities in China, home to a variety of both old and modern attractions for travellers to explore. From museums to national landmarks, travellers are spoilt for choice.

A modern attraction that is gradually becoming synonymous with the city’s identity, similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris is the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai. Constructed between 1991 and 1995 it is one of the tallest completed towers in Asia. Its modern design and imposing height make it stand out as a beacon amongst the more conventional buildings in Shanghai’s Business District.

Situated near the trendy Bund District on the banks of the Huangpu River, the Oriental Pearl Tower is more than just a simple communications tower. The towers structure comprises of 11 spheres of varying size. The highest sphere is known as the Space Module. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and the various river tributaries that crisscross through Shanghai. Within this module are a revolving restaurant, discotheque and relaxing piano lounge. The restaurant serves both international and traditional chinese cuisine and completes one revolution every hour.

The smaller spheres in-between the central base sphere and Space Module are made up of more than 15 observation decks offering varying views of the Shanghai cityscape.

The central base sphere is home to Space City a science fiction in-door museum cum theme park. It houses a variety of interesting galleries pertaining to space and man’s exploits into the cosmos along with a laser theatre. For those who wish to hold a social or business gathering with a unique perspective over Shanghai, the base sphere offers a convention size hall able to cater to a multitude of events.

The Oriental Pearl Tower benefits from a central location near Shanghai’s Business District and can be accessed from all round the city via several modes of transport. There are dedicated bus routes that converge at the Oriental Pearl Tower from several key locations, including a Maglev and MRT stop.

The discerning traveller looking for a more upmarket hotel in Shanghai will discover many to choose from. However once you have separated the wheat from the chaff, one in particular stands out as a prime example of a luxury boutique hotel in Shanghai. The Langham Yangtze Boutique Shanghai offers an exclusive centrally located abode in the heart of Shanghai. Offering a range of world class amenities and services to suit your every whim and desire, The Langham Yangtze Boutique Shanghai strives to ensure that your stay is pleasurable and relaxing.

Los Angeles is one of the most exciting and famous metropolis on the planet. Spread out in between a mountain range and the Pacific Ocean, Los Angeles is home to 4 million people and several smaller neighborhoods-each with their own unique charm. of hotel choices. Unlike other cities of similar size, LA is not centralized nor does it have an efficient transit system. Hotels in Los Angeles are spread out through the entire city, often clumping in individual neighborhoods. The neighborhoods of Los Angeles with the highest concentration of hotel properties are Downtown LA, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the beach areas. Each neighborhood has both attractive and unattractive traits for picking a hotel.

Downtown Los Angeles in recent years has seen a major revival. Home to the Staples Center, Financial District and LA Convention Center, downtown is segregated from other areas of the city. There are many choices of hotel accommodations in this area of Los Angeles. Most of the hotels are on safe clean streets and walking distance to the above mentioned attractions in addition to Disney Concert Hall, City Hall, Olvera Street, Union Station, Broadway historic theatre district and the Jewelry district. The 101 (Hollywood) freeway originates near downtown and provides visitors with easy access (if light traffic ten minutes) to Hollywood. Other areas of the city are up to 20 minutes to an hour from downtown. Many of the visitors of downtown hotels are often in LA for business or to attend one of the many tradeshows downtown. In 2010 the five star Ritz Carlton, an all glass high rise will be opening in downtown LA.

Hollywood is a perfect hotel option for those looking to strictly sight see and who are arriving with families and or children. This area of Hollywood does not have any five star luxury hotel properties but there are many smaller clean boutique hotels. The most popular hotels with tourists are those on Hollywood Blvd, Highland and Franklin Avenues near the Hollywood and Highland center. The hotels in section of Hollywood area all less than a 5 minute walk to the Walk of Fame, Grauman's chinese Theatre tour bus departure points in the Hollywood and Highland Center. West Hollywood and Beverly Hills are only 10 and 20 minutes away respectively. The beaches can be up to an hour drive during peak travel times from any hotel in Hollywood.

West Hollywood is located between Hollywood and Beverly Hills and has the highest concentration of hotels out of anywhere in Los Angeles. The famed Sunset Strip that is home to world famous night and comedy clubs, neon billboards and a constant flow of traffic that feature some of the highest price cars in the world has several hotels that line its sidewalks. Sunset Strip in West Hollywood extends along the edge of a hill. The hotels perched on the side of Sunset offer guests amazing views of Los Angeles, Downtown and the ocean in addition to the hustle and bustle of the Sunset Strip below. The area that lies between Sunset Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd is largely residential but is home to several hotel properties. Hotels in this area are convenient to both the Sunset Strip and the LGBT area of Santa Monica Blvd. The area south of Santa Monica Blvd also hosts several hotels and is home to some of LA's biggest shopping areas including Robertson Blvd and the Beverly Center. This area is home to many smaller boutique hotels as well.

Beverly Hills with its pristine streets, power shopping and celebrity mansions is a good location for a hotel stay when visiting Los Angeles. Near West Hollywood and Hollywood and 20 minutes or less from the beaches, the City of Beverly Hills hosts a variety of hotels from brand name luxury properties to smaller boutiques. Most of the hotels in Beverly Hills can be found along or off Santa Monica and Wilshire Blvds. Located on Sunset Blvd, the Beverly Hills Hotels is the only hotel in Beverly Hills that is not near other properties or shopping centers. The hotels along Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd include the Beverly Hilton, Beverly Wilshire and Luxe-Beverly Hills.

For those looking to be on the Pacific and still enjoy the fun of Los Angeles, the Santa Monica and Venice areas offer a broad choice of hotel accommodations that are right on the water and close to all the sights. Ocean Ave in Santa Monica runs along the edge of a cliff with beautiful views of the ocean and is lined with thousands of palm trees. Multiple hotels rise above Ocean Ave and offer guests unobstructed views of the Ocean and Mountains. The third street promenade and Santa Monica Pier are just a few minutes walk from any of these hotels. At the intersection of Ocean Ave and Pico Blvd there are a large number of luxury resorts. Casa Del Mar, Sutters and Lowes all sit right on the beach while the Vice Roy further back on Ocean Ave affords guests spectacular views of the ocean. In Venice the Erwin Hotel is located right on Ocean Front Walk where visitors booking a room at this beach front property will never have to leave their room to observe all the excitement on Ocean Front Walk below.

Most people making a visit to LA would ideally like to see all the city has to offer. Finding a hotel in the neighborhood of Los Angeles that most interests the visitor is a good start to having a fun and engaging trip to Los Angeles.

shanghai hilton hotel in shanghai

Standing in a faraway land, Brian Gay knew very well where he wanted to go without any assurances he would get there.

It was approaching midnight in India, and the shuttle bus to the hotel was already full. Gay hopped into a cab with his bride of two weeks and two other men he had never seen, then hung on for the ride of his life.

They arrived safely at the hotel that night. Gay wound up missing the cut in the 1997 Classic India Open, barely caught the last flight out and headed back to the Philippines for the next adventure in another of golf's outposts.

That's what makes his return to Asia next week so rewarding.

Gay is going to China not because he has to play, but because he can. His two victories this year, by a combined 15 shots, earned him a spot in the HSBC Champions, a World Golf Championship with a 78-man field featuring Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington.

The long flight to Shanghai? That's nothing compared with the journey that brought Gay to this stage of his career. The 37-year-old had a breakthrough season that doesn't get enough attention. He produced the year's largest margin of victory at Hilton Head (10 shots), then won in Memphis by five. Gay has topped $3 million in earnings and has risen to No. 38 in the world. So going back to Asia is more about celebration than desperation to Gay.

Gay said that the last time he went, he was pretty fresh out of college and looked for anywhere to play to make some money. After winning nine times on four mini-tours, Gay heard about other Americans going to Asia and thought he would give it a try. His first stop was the Mitsubishi Motors-Southwoods Open in the Philippines, where he tied for fifth and earned $8,667 from a $250,000 purse . By the way, next week in Shanghai offers a $7 million purse with $1.2 million to the winner and $25,000 for last place.

His travels took him from the Philippines to Malaysia to Singapore to India to Thailand with one break -- he returned to Alabama in the midst of this adventure to get married.

Gay had met Kimberly in an airport. She didn't know much about golf, but love made her learn quickly. No sooner had vows been exchanged, they were on their way to Singapore.

Gay had his wife caddie for him at the Rolex Masters at Singapore Island, where he opened with a 65. She used a pull cart, and the job was going along fine until Gay hit into a fairway bunker.

''He tells me I have to rake the bunker and I said, 'Oh, no. I'm not raking that bunker.' He said, 'You have to. Caddies rake the bunker.' The other players are waiting in the fairway, and finally he rakes the bunker,'' she said. ''That's how little I knew about golf. We almost have this fight on the golf course and he shoots 65.''

They left there for India, then to the Philippines, where Gay recalls watching from his hotel room in the middle of the night as Woods won the 1997 Masters by a record 12 shots.

He couldn't help but wonder if he would ever make it to the PGA Tour, or to Augusta National.

''There were good weeks and bad weeks,'' he said. ''There were times when you said, 'I can't believe I'm over here.' I stayed in some rough places. But the experience of playing other places and all the things you have to deal with, you learn a lot of patience in a hurry.''

The patience finally was rewarded when Gay made it through Q-school and found some stability, although it took him until last year -- 293 starts on the PGA -- before he won for the first time at the Mayacoba Classic in Mexico.

Kimberly Gay has come to appreciate the coincidences in life.

Cancun was the first vacation they took together, and 10 years later, he won his first PGA Tour event there. She had planned on going to Singapore this week until Gay, worn out from a big year, decided to play only in Shanghai. Beijing, located in northern China, is the second largest city in China, next to Shanghai, and the capital of the People’s Republic of China. Beijing is a major hub for transportation, which makes it even more important in the overall economics of the country. It is also the point to which many international flights arrive and depart.

Beijing is considered the political, cultural, and educational centre of China. Beijing, as one of the four great ancient capitals of China, will have an important place in history again when it hosts the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Getting To Beijing 2008

Going to Beijing 2008 is something that will take a lot of planning. If you are arriving in Beijing for the Summer Olympic Games, it is advised to make reservations as soon as possible. If you are simply traveling to Beijing for business or for pleasure, it is much easier to arrange. Most international flights to China will arrive at the Beijing Capital International Airport. In fact, flights to Shanghai, China, often arrive first in Beijing, and flights from London to Hong Kong are often routed through the Beijing Airport. When taking China holidays for whatever reason, flying into Beijing is often the best bet. Flights from the UK to Beijing arrive at least twice a day, and the number of flights will increase as the Summer Olympics Games 2008 approach.

The Beijing airport is located near Shunyi, about 20 km northeast of Beijing. Most of the flights within China, and the majority of the cheap flights, will arrive and depart from the Beijing Capital International Airport, the main hub for Air China.

One can get from the Beijing airport to the city centre by taking the Airport Expressway. This is about a 40-minute drive depending upon the traffic, and another expressway will be completed before the Beijing 2008 Summer Games. There will also be a light rail system that will transport people from the airport to the city centre.

Where To Stay in Beijing 2008

Finding a place to stay in Beijing during normal times is usually quite easy. If a person arrives in Beijing for business or for holiday, there are many hotels from which to choose. This was not always the case, as Beijing had almost no hotels in the early development of China, which was due to social as well as economic conditions. However, the years since have seen a great increase in the number and quality of hotels.

There are currently many hotels to choose from in Beijing including Best Western, Hilton, and several other international hotel chains. These hotels cater to business travelers as well as holiday goers. From the airport, one can find transportation directly to these hotels, and other information on the hotels, such as their location, pricing, and room availability, is also available.

Shopping and Eating in Beijing 2008

When one is in Beijing for business, finding places to shop and eat might not be at the top of the list of things to do. However, during a down time, or during a holiday, one can find many places within the city centre to do some shopping and dining. The Central Business District, which is centered in the Guomao area, is the best place to find local shopping. This is an area that also has high-end housing, as well as many corporate regional and national headquarters.

Also, in this area, one can find many interesting restaurants in which to eat, where the main crops of the Beijing area are used in the local cuisine. This includes many dishes made with wheat, maize, and vegetables which are grown close to the city in order to supply the city with food.

Sights to See In Beijing 2008

When one is in Beijing for any reason, you might want to take some time to see several local sights. Even a business traveler should take a few hours and see one of the most important tourist attractions in all of China, the main entrance to the Forbidden City. Other interesting sights are the Badaling section of the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace, and the Temple of Heaven.

Beijing 2008 Olympics

Beijing will have another claim to fame when the 2008 Summer Olympic games are held in this city from August 8th, 2008, to August 24th, 2008. Most of the events will be held within Beijing at the Beijing National Stadium; however, some events will be held in other cities in China.

The awarding of the Olympics to Beijing 2008 marked a real turning point in history. The chinese government sees these games as the chance for the country, as well as for Beijing, to highlight its rise into a World Power. If one hopes to travel to Beijing for these games, it is a good idea to make arrangements for travel well in advance.
