Antique lovers have been flocking to China for many years. The country’s rich and diverse history has enabled it to produce spectacular examples of furniture, garments and porcelain that are renowned the world over.

Of the many major antique hubs in the key cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, Hong Kong SAR’s arises as one of the most popular and easily accessible by locals and international antique collectors and dealers.

Hollywood Road was the second road to be built in the newly established colony of Hong Kong back in 1844. Despite its namesake the road has no relation to the Californian movie capital; in fact the road is actually named after the Holly trees that used to adorn the surrounding area.

The stretch of Hollywood Road is home to the heart of the antiques industry in Hong Kong. Visitors exploring the road will feel as if they have stepped into a giant walk-in street museum housing various artefacts both ancient and modern.

Lining the street are galleries and shops catering from high end rare antiques to more modern Maoist collectibles. Visitors will find items such as traditional chinese furniture, rattan, porcelain and Buddha sculptures.

When looking to purchase goods from these antique stores, visitors should know that bargaining is a common practice. The prices displayed may sometimes far exceed the value of the item in an attempt to promote bargaining.

After a busy day of antique shopping, travellers can take in the various landmarks and parks dotted around Hollywood Road. The Man Mo Temple is one of the oldest buildings on Hollywood Road. Built as a tribute to the god of literature (Man) and the god of war (Mo), the quiet incense filled interior allows for a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong’s busy streets. Many student come to this shrine to pay tribute and wish for good luck during local examinations.

The second most popular landmark is the Central Police Station. This was the first police station in Hong Kong to be setup by the British in 1864. The police station received many expansions throughout its service including a two storied Stable block and adjoining Headquarters block. The police station lies alongside the Victoria Prison and Central Magistracy. Together they stand as prime examples of British colonial architecture symbolising the roots of modern law and order in the region.

Hollywood Road is ideally located close to Hong Kong’s Central Business District. Accommodation choices in the area are diverse ranging from hostels to luxury retreats. Hotels in Hong Kong range from the simple: providing just the basic necessities to 5 star luxury complexes that pamper their guests. The Eaton Hotel Hong Kong stands out among hotels in Kowloon by providing a centrally located abode in the heart of Hong Kong. This premiere establishment provides the right balance between creature comforts and essential amenities. Be it a business trip or vacation The Eaton Hotel Hong Kong is sure to make your stay an enjoyable one.

Datong Tours

Lying in the northern area of Shanxi Province, Datong is one of the 24 famous historical and cultural cities in China. Surrounded by Inner Mongolia, Shuozhou, and Xinzhou on the west and south side, and Hebei Province on the east, Datong has four districts and seven counties under its prefecture with a population of 2.99 million.

Known as the 'City of the Coal', Datong has developed into the second largest industrial city in Shanxi due to its advantage in energy. Its large reserves of coal make it a very important energy base for China.

Under the influence of continental monsoon climate of temperate zone, Datong’s climate is dry and windy, and the temperature varies greatly between day and night. The city has a frost-free period of only 125 days a year. It has an average annual temperature of 6.4 C (38F), and an average annual rainfall of 400-500 millimeters.

With a history of over 2,400 years, Datong was originally constructed as a military stronghold, holding out the hordes that frequently pushed south from Mongolia. It’s become the capital in Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534AD) for 96 years, and the 'support capital' of Liao (916-1125AD) and Jin Dynasty (1115-1234AD). The fact of being the political, economic and military center of ancient Northern China has left Datong with a series of splendid historic and cultural relics like the Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Monastery and Nine Dragon Screen, etc. The Yungang Grottoes was listed as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2001.  Datong tour operator offers the travelers the diversified Datong tours, including ready-made Datong tour package, custom Datong tours

travel beijing to shanghai
Is one week after the start of chinese New Year a good time to travel to China?

I want to travel to Beijing/Shanghai in the winter/early spring of 2007. However, Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) begins Feb. 18 and travel will be crazy. There are many crowds & full hotels as it is a business/school holiday and Chinese people will travel to visit family. I would really like to avoid this hectic period. Will waiting 1 week (Feb.25) be enough for crowds to go down and return to work, or should I wait until about March 10 or March 15?

You should be fine. I found that traveling during public holidays was just cazy. EVERYONE has the day off, and in China that means alot of people trying to take trains and buses and planes. Wait a few days and things calm down since everyone goes back to work. So yeah, you should be good.

Hope that helps

This little town has such amazing scenery and refreshing air that Queen Victoria's doctor recommended it to her. It is located 1,000 feet above sea level, right on the road junction from Aberdeen and Perth. It's post office is actually 1,110 feet above sea level. It is known as the main place of the Braemar Gathering, where Jacobites held a serious gathering in 1715. There have been gatherings at Braemar since the days that King Malcolm Canmore of Scotland reigned. Queen Elizabeth even attends this gathering, which takes place in September.

The Gaelic language was spoken in Braemar until about 1900. This scenic area is bordered with around 24 Munros, which is the name used for large hills that can usually be climbed in a pair of tennis shoes. There are many mountains also surrounding this little town.

There is much wildlife seen along the trails in Braemar; pheasant, deer, squirrels, and the occasional brown bear. Pony trekking, mountain biking, hang-gliding, climbing, bowling, snow-boarding, golfing, and skiing are all available during the right season.

Braemar offers an extensive choice of accommodations to suit the needs of anyone. There are even camping locations for those who desire to be in touch with the outdoors. A ski resort in Glenshee is nearby and Braemar serves as a popular stay-over town for skiers. The Royal Lochnagar, a distillery near Braemar, is also a destination desired by people who stay in this little town.

A tourist information center is available for travelers needing assistance. This area will provide any information needed when traveling around to other locations near Braemar and to answer any questions. They would be able to provide further details about how Robert Louis Stevenson came to Braemar in 1881 and got the idea of Treasure Island, as well as many stories connected with Jacobite history, and overall local history.

For accommodation in Braemar check this list of Braemar hotels.
