Most of us do not associate "Made in China" with luxury or designer brands but more and more of those fancy Italian shoes you like so much are actually made in China. You just may not find a tag inside the shoe saying so.

Especially in the current economic market, the sales of luxury items have decreased significantly and some designer brands are suffering. One of the most effective ways to cut costs is to move the base of operation overseas, and China provides one of the most appealing markets to set up shop.

The fact that "American" or "European" shoes are made in China is no secret. Nike has long been associated with "Made in China" shoes; in fact, approximately one in three of Nike's sneakers come with a "Made in China" sticker. This compromise is trickier for designer brands such as Chanel, Prada and Armani that have built the success of their brand on "European craftsmanship" through and through. One of the reasons that someone might spend an extra 300 dollars on a Prada shoe is that they want a piece of artisanal Europe. They want to believe that what they are purchasing is the real deal - an Italian leather shoe built by someone who knows and loves the art of shoemaking, not by a factory worker in China.

So which companies have jumped continents? Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Bally and Prada, to name a few brands. But not all of these companies are willing to publicize this new base of operation. In fact, in some of these shoes you will find a "Made in Italy" label where perhaps a "Made in China" label should be instead. This is possible thanks to some very flexible labeling laws which base a product's label on the final point of production. So shoes made in China will have a leather sole attached in Italy and Voila! The shoes are legally "Made in Italy".

That is not to say that these shoes are worse quality now than when they were manufactured in Europe. The claim is that workers in China are fast and precise. That is, they are capable of making equally high-quality shoes just in less time and for less money.

According to Giorgio Bonacarso - a chemical supplier who sells products to chinese factories that manufacture Italian shoes - nine out of 10 of the high-end Italian shoe companies are now making at least part of their shoes in China. You, the consumer, may not be aware of it, and that is because the designer brands are afraid of backlash and losing the image that made them stand out from the pack in the first place.

International business is all business transactions-private and governmental-that involve two or more countries. Why should one be interested in studying international business? The simplest answer is that international business comprises a large and growing portion of the world's total business. The network can be using similar subcontractors or components, sharing research and development costs or operating within the same governmental framework. Clearly, when businesses formulate a trading block with no internal barriers they are actually creating their own networks. Collaborations in aerospace, vehicle manufactures and engineering have all sponsored the development of a country's or a group of countries' outlook based on their own internal market network. This network and interaction approach to internationalisation shows the substance of being able to influence decisions when knowing how the global network players work or interact.

For example, a crucial market network is that of the Middle East. Middle East countries are rich, diverse markets, with a vibrant and varied cultural heritage. This means that although there has been a harmonisation process during the past few years, differences still exist. Rather than business being simpler as a result, it should be recognised that because of regulations and the need those countries have to restructure as they enter the global market, performing any kind of business can be highly complex. It should be remembered though that the Middle-Eastern countries have a low-income average and like to have their cultural differences recognised. Those firms that will or have recognised these facts have a good chance of developing a successful marketing strategy to meet their needs. Fortunately some firms have realised these important differences and reacted adequately when strategic decisions had to be made regarding their penetration to this kind of markets.

Looking for a list of manufacturers in China with known safe and unsafe practices?

I recently read that our government has a list chinese manufacturers that includes safe and unsafe companies. I know not to put faith in such a thing and would'nt even trust our governments take on one but I'd like to look at one if anyone knows of a web posting.
I am not looking to go into manufacturing products myself. Just wondering if there are known better (safer) companies exporting products than others.

Over 250 billion dollars worth of goods per year are imported from China by American manufacturers. Imports from China can be your ticket to wealth or quickly turn into a nightmare for your company if you do not do the proper research BEFORE you start importing. This article will explain some common problems encountered by small companies who start importing products from China.

1) Only Deal With Credible Exporters: One of the most important things you can do before starting the process is to make certain that you are dealing with credible chinese exporters. Often times, American manufacturers will search the internet for potential exporters and end up with a list of names or companies that they know nothing about. The following scenario happens everyday to some unsuspecting new importer with no knowledge.

Company (YourNameHere) sends their samples over to a potential Chinese exporter for remanufacture and is thrilled when 6 weeks later their samples arrive. The quality of the samples you received are outstanding and the price is unbelievably low. Everything seems great, so you wire $12,000.00 to your Chinese exporter for the first order... and you never hear from him again! That's right - those 3 samples you received just cost you $12,000.00 and you have absolutely no recourse. How do you avoid this common mistake? Ask for references from your Chinese export source and check them thoroughly. Chances are, if the US firms that have already dealt with your exporter have had good luck, then you probably will as well. Be careful! Although most exporters from China are honest - there are plenty that are not.

2) Know your terminology and BE SPECIFIC. My company ordered 3,000 leather "widgets" from an exporter that we had been doing business with for several years and expected no problems with the upcoming shipment. Until it arrived. The products were delivered and we quickly realized that the "widgets" were not made of leather but rather cheap vinyl. We immediately contacted our exporter and demanded an explanation as to why our products were not made from leather as clearly stated on the purchase order. His response was: "Oh... in China, if you want something made from real leather, then you have to say "genuine" leather. If you don't say genuine, then you get imitation. An expensive lesson learned.

3) Quality Control: There is none! If you are lucky enough to be the owner of Wal-Mart then you operate your own manufacturing plants in China and have control over quality. If you are a small company who relies on the exporter or the Chinese manufacturer to control quality, then you can count on having quality problems. What's that mean? It means that from one shipment to the next you may be sent items that don't match in color to your previous order. Worst case scenario? The next shipments of products might look very different with completely different packaging.

4) Shipping: Once again - if you don't give exact shipping instructions then you run the risk of receiving a container which is filled to the top with a pile of boxes that literally fall all over you when you open the container doors. Ask me how I know this. Make sure you request all boxes within a container to be palletized and wrapped in shrink wrap.

5) The Bright Side: Importing goods from China can be a VERY profitable experience as long as you make sure that you are dealing with reputable exporters. Avoid using export brokers who search all over China for small manufacturers that will quickly throw your purchase order together with no regards to quality. The best bet is to deal directly with established Chinese manufacturing firms that specialize in one product line. If you want to import MP3 players, then search out Chinese manufacturers that specialize in that product and have a proven track record for quality and on time delivery.

Many people have a certain conception that all products that come from China are cheap junk put together by a one-armed peasant. Okay, maybe not the one-armed peasant thing, but the rest holds true in most Americans' minds. So you may be asking is it true...does China put out only crappy products? The answer is of course not.

Just because you have had cheap remote or something made of plastic with the logo "made in China" stamped on it, doesn't mean that all products that come out of China are junk. You would be surprised to find out how much of your own stuff was actually made in China for companies like GE, Panasonic, and others. Everything imaginable comes from China these days.

The big difference is what place in China made the product. If you are an ATV fanatic or just simply enjoy riding one from time to time, you may have come across a too good to be true deal that was an ATV for under $1000, sometimes way under. You see things like this all the time if you do a Google search for ATVs. People are selling ATVs for $399. How is this? To turn a reasonable profit on each unit after advertising, they must have only paid $50 for each unit. This is because they are buying the cheapest stuff possible from government owned factories. These factories hire unskilled labor and can really make a lot of mistakes.

Not all factories in China are like this. There are many that are privately owned and hire highly skilled laborers to assemble the products. These factories have very good quality control, and will fix things when problems arise. Not only that, but they are usually close in cost to the government owned factories. Sure they cost more, but for the extra quality that you receive, it is well worth it.

What are the benefits and setbacks of buying online vs. buying in a local dealership? Most name brand ATVs are sold in dealerships only. You hardly ever see Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, or other name brands being sold new online unless they are being sold by someone that simply bought one and is trying to sell it for one reason or another. They are not dealerships. This is because before the internet, the ATV companies set up dealer territories. Dealers could not sell to customers outside their territory, especially someone else's territory. The cost for a name brand ATV ranges anywhere from $3000 to $11000, not including the helmet and any accessories you may purchase. chinese-made models cost between $400 and $3000. They are considerably cheaper and can be a great deal if you choose wisely.

It seems that the only websites that are selling online are ones that sell Chinese product. The product is always cheaper than any name brand and usually has something like free shipping included. This is a huge benefit to buying online. Not only that, but sales tax is only charged if you live in the same state that the shipping warehouse is located in. The sales tax savings may not last forever, because the government is watching a lot of tax dollars go out the window, but due to a couple of court cases that said charging tax on items that were sold from another state was against the interstate commerce ruling, it is still cheaper to buy things online. So enjoy if you are a buying or selling on the internet.

Be careful which product you buy online. If the seller does not offer a 90 day or longer warranty on the ATV then you may be about to get taken to the cleaners.

Most online dealers will ship the product about 80-90% assembled. This is to reduce shipping costs. If you don't understand how to assemble the remaining product then you will want to take it or have it shipped directly to a professional for assembly. Don't assume that because you know how to change your oil, you will be able to assemble an ATV out of the crate, unless you have very good instructions.

The repairs are just like any other piece of machinery. Most Chinese models are copied versions of name brand ATVs, so you can even buy Yamaha parts, for example, to repair your ATV.

So if you choose to buy an ATV online, pick a good dealer. They can provide you with the quality you are looking for.
